Can Your Website Handle Traffic or Does it Turn Into the H1 Freeway at Rush Hour?

April 3, 2015 By Arlen Nagata

If you have never run a Load Impact Test on your website, you might be surprized at what you find.

What is a Load Impact Test?

A Load Impact measures what happens to your website when a large amount of traffic hits it at the SAME TIME.  All websites can handle 1-2 people coming to the website at a time.  But what happens when your website is picked up in the news or gets some publicity that causes it to “go viral”.

Most businesses would love to get a lot of traffic, but the reality is that when a website gets a lot of traffic, it can be like 500 cars crashing on the freeway.  The traffic would cause the server to shut down lanes and traffic would trickle through, websites would get broken, and the end result is that people would NEVER visit your website again.

Who wants to deal with rush hour traffic anyway? Not internet surfers.

Real World Examples of a Load Impact Test:

Here is a website I was just hired to manage at a reputable web host (their name shall not be mentioned to protect the guilty).

Even sending 25 Virtual Users to this website ground it to a halt.  Sometimes the pages took TWO MINUTES to load… not seconds, minutes!!!  At that point, many websites start to break, images don’t load, files are missed and the website appears broken and incomplete.

Here’s my website under the same load…

My site never takes more than 2 seconds to load and I haven’t really optimized it at all.

What’s the difference?

The main difference in a Load Impact Test is the Web Host.  There are some things you can do to help like caching.  But having a great Web Host goes a long way to handling a lot of traffic on your website.

Try Load Testing Your Website:

Go to Load Impact.com to test your website.  And if your web host and setup looks like traffic on Hawaii’s H1 Freeway at rush hour, then consider switching web hosts and giving your website a speed boost.

For a limited time, you can sign up for my web hosting and management package.  I am testing this as something I am offering and if it proves to be unfruitful, this offer will go away.  But for now, you can signup here:
